6 Indian Hawthorn Diseases – Learn How to Fix Them Quickly

Suffering from Indian Hawthorn diseases is a hectic issue that I faced last year. My Hawthorn plants were growing happily. But suddenly, I noticed some diseases like entomosporium leaf spot, root rot, powdery mildew, rust, fire blight and verticillium wilt.

I was searching for ways to solve them and found some solutions. I applied them to my plants and noticed the changes. Fortunately, the changes were positive and I got back my plant.

Hence, I want to share those experiences with you so that you also may get solutions to prevent the disease occurrence in your plant. You can find them scrolling below.

6 Common Indian Hawthorn Diseases With Perfect Solutions

1. Entomosporium Leaf Spot

This is one of the main fungal diseases of Indian Hawthorn. Sometimes, you will find dark pin-headed spots in your Hawthorn leaves. Gradually, the spot enlarges and yellowish halos are found around the spot.

At the severe stage of infestation, the spots coalesce together and create a large diseased area. Thus, you can identify Hawthorn tree diseased leaves

Causes

Entomosporium leaf spot happens due to high humidity and high temperature. If the rainfall exceeds the normal level, such fungus may grow on the leaves.

2. Root Rot

Next, let’s discuss the root rot disease of Indian Hawthorn. This problem is caused by the basal part of the plant. The fungus attacks the root of the plant and secretes toxic substances that may induce root rot problems.

In the final stage, the root completely gets destroyed. As a result, the plant cannot get any nutrition and becomes wilted.

Causes

Root rot problem is caused due to overwatering. If you overwater your plant, it cannot uptake the whole water. As a result, the rest of the water remains in the root zone. In such situations, pathogens grow and attack the plant.

3. Powdery Mildew

Powdery mildew is not a serious disease of Indian Hawthorn like leaf spot or root rot. But the problem is, it destroys the beauty of the glossy appearance of the foliage.

If you see any powder-like structure in the leaves, you can identify them as Hawthorn tree leaf disease. The fungal spores create mass on the leaves and those masses resemble powdery structures.

Causes

Powdery mildew can be caused due to high temperatures and stormy winds as the fungus causing powdery mildew is an air-borne disease. Else, high humidity or injuries happening to the plant can also be the cause of powdery mildew.

4. Rust

After that, I will discuss one of the most observed diseases of Indian Hawthorn, which is rust. The fungus creates suppressing spots on the leaves and becomes brown. You can get them mostly on the upper sides of the leaves. Improper caring may cause the death of the plant.

Causes

This disease is also caused due to high humidity and high rainfall with high temperatures. Pathogens love to grow in high temperatures.

5. Fire Blight

Fire blight is normally caused due to bacterial attacks. At first, water-soaked brown lesions are formed on the leaves. After a certain time, the lesions coalesce together and form a big blighted area.

At the severe stage of infestation, the spread is found on the whole leaf part and the leaf dies having a burnt-like appearance.

Causes

High rainfall is the main issue of bacterial spreading. Besides, high humidity and high temperature also increase the rate of infestation.

6. Verticillium Wilt

The final one is verticillium wilt, which is also a bacterial disease. The plant starts to lose its nutrients and gradually the leaves start drooping. After a certain time, the whole plant becomes wilted and looks like a dead plant.

Causes

As I mentioned before, bacteria spread due to high rainfall. High temperature and high humidity facilitate the infestation rate and enhance the wilting condition.

Indian Hawthorn Disease Treatment

Indian Hawthorn diseases can be controlled by following some prominent steps. You should remove the affected parts of the plant to check the spreading of the plant first. Next, drain out the plant soil so that water-logging conditions are not produced. This will prevent the growth of bacteria

After that, you can apply some homemade recipes to your plant to save it like neem oil solution, baking soda solution, essential oil and liquid soap solution.

  • Baking soda solution

Use 4 tablespoons of baking soda with 1 gallon of water and mix them well. Then, spray it on the plant.

  • Neem oil solution

Take 2 tablespoons of concentrated neem oil, 1 tablespoon of aloe vera powder and a few drops of essential oil and mix properly. Then apply it to your plant.

  • Liquid soap solution

Mix a few drops of liquid soap with 1 gallon of water and prepare the mixture. Then spray it on the plant.

If your plant cannot get rid of diseases after applying these methods and is severely infested with diseases, you should apply fungicides or bactericides to your plant. Fungicides under the Carbendazim group (Our pick) are considered best to treat fungal diseases of Indian Hawthorn.

How to Prevent Diseases of Indian Hawthorn

A saying is always proved that ‘prevention is better than cure’. That’s why you should always be careful about your plant health so that fungal or bacterial diseases cannot grow.

  • Watering

Water properly the plant so that excess water cannot remain there. Pathogens grow from those places very quickly. The drainage system should also be improved to prevent the spread of pathogens. Make sure that rainwater is not standing near your plant.

  • Soil treatment

You can use some soil-treating chemicals like chloropicrin, ethylene dibromide and salt copper (Our pick) to keep the soil pathogen free. You can take suggestions from experienced people.

  • Humidity management

Try to keep the humidity level around 60% to avoid the spread of any type of disease. High humidity is a main factor for the growth of pathogens.

  • Fertilization

Provide a perfect amount of fertilizers to your Hawthorn plant in early spring. This will help the bloom and keep the plant free from diseases. Using dilute fertilizers (Our pick) may be helpful for you.

FAQs

Which weather is favorable for disease?

Cloudy weather with high humidity facilitates disease infection. Take extra care of your plant during such weather so that pathogens cannot grow inside the plant

How do pathogens enter the plant?

Commonly, mechanical damages create a path for pathogens to enter the plant. Wounded tissues cannot create protection for the plant and thus the plant gets affected.

What can I do before planting to keep the soil pathogen-free?

To keep the plants pathogen-free from the beginning of their life, you should treat the soil with fungicides so that the soil can remain disease-free. Thus, the plant will remain safe from getting attacked by diseases at the initiation of its life.

Final Thoughts

So, here is the last phase of my detailed discussion. Indian Hawthorn diseases are not much hard to manage if you can technically take the decisions for your plant. But it gets serious when the damages become severe.

But, by noticing the growth and appearance of your plant, you can easily understand if any diseases occur. Steps taken at the initial stages of a disease attack are helpful for the plant. So try those and keep your Indian Hawthorn plant healthy and disease-free.
